Commit to becoming a more sustainable hostel with the Global Tourism Plastics Initiative (GTPI)

Sustainable travel is growing in demand, as hostel travellers are becoming more climate conscious with two-thirds (65%) of hostel guests more likely to stay in ‘green’ accommodation than five years ago.

New findings also showed that majority (92%) of guests are willing to pay more to stay in accommodation that cares for the environment. In fact, hostel travellers ranked reducing single-use plastic as more important to them that the aesthetic design of the hostel.

This is one of the many reasons that Hostelworld has committed to doing more to help our customers travel more sustainably. One of our actions is becoming a signatory of the Global Tourism Plastics Initiative (GTPI).

The Global Tourism Plastics Initiative (GTPI) unites the tourism sector behind a common vision to address the root causes of plastic pollution. It aims to eliminate the use of unnecessary plastic within the travel industry by 2025. The initiative is led by the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and the World Tourism Organization (WTO), in collaboration with the Ellen MacArthur Foundation.

Hostelworld has committed to encouraging its hostel partners to sign up to join the initiative as well as providing advice and guidance to hostels to better manage plastics, aiming to eliminate problematic or unnecessary plastic packaging and items within the hostel industry by 2025. By signing up to the GTPI you will be working in partnership with us on this mission.

When signing up every hostel will be asked to make a few commitments to show how you intend to eliminate unnecessary plastics within your operations.

Some examples of commitments made by hostel signatories

  • Eliminating plastic items from service areas, food & drinks and cleaning services by 2021
  • Introducing reusable solutions in kitchens, cleaning, food & drinks to replace packaging by 2025
  • Taking action to increase the amount of recycled content across all plastic packaging and items used by 2025

If you are interested in becoming a signatory and joining our mission to lessen our impact on the environment, then please sign up now here

We will soon share with our hostel partners a ‘Sustainable Handbook’ with advice and guidance to help
