Managing Digital Wallets & Card Payment Settings
This article explains how to manage digital wallet payments (Apple Pay and Google Pay) on Hostelworld, how to switch to Card Payments Only, and how hidden card details affect collecting extra fees or deposits.
Hostelworld allows guests to check out using digital wallets (Apple Pay and Google Pay) or traditional payment cards.
Depending on how your property handles incidental charges, no-show fees, or damage deposits, you can choose whether to keep digital wallets enabled or restrict bookings to credit/debit card payments only.
Digital Wallets vs. Card Payments Only
| Setting | How It Works | Impact on Extra Fees / No-Shows |
| Accept Digital Wallets (Default) | Guests can pay using Apple Pay, Google Pay, or standard cards. Provides a faster mobile checkout experience. | Card details are hidden. Tokenized payments mean card numbers are not stored or retrievable. You cannot manually charge additional fees to these cards later. |
| Card Payments Only | Disables Apple Pay and Google Pay. Guests must enter standard credit or debit card details. | Card details are accessible. Stored card details allow you to charge no-show fees, late cancellations, or damage deposits manually. |
To adjust your payment settings in the Inbox:
- Log in to your Inbox with Manager-level access.
- Go to Property Setup > Microsite Content > Payment Methods.
- Select your preference:
- Keep digital wallets enabled (Recommended to maximize booking conversion).
- Select "Card Payments Only" (Recommended if your operational workflow requires stored card details for all bookings).
- Save your changes.
If you keep digital wallets enabled but need a way to collect secondary charges (such as security deposits or local taxes not included in the rate):
- Update your Terms & Conditions: State clearly in your property's House Rules / Terms that guests paying with digital wallets may be required to present a valid card or payment method upon arrival or prior to check-in.
- Contact guests before arrival: Reach out directly via guest messaging to collect an alternative payment method for any potential secondary fees before check-in.
