Now entering their 24th year, the HOSCARs highlight excellence in hospitality, sustainability, community, and cultural connection — reflecting what travellers value most.

The HOSCARs began over two decades ago as a way to recognise the top-rated hostels on Hostelworld, based entirely on customer reviews.

The name “HOSCARs” comes from HOStelworld Customer Annual Ratings, and since the early 2000s, the awards have grown into one of the most respected honours in the hostel industry.

  • Early Years: The first HOSCARs celebrated the highest-rated hostels globally, judged purely by traveller feedback.

  • Evolution: During the pandemic years, the format evolved to include submission-based Responsible Travel categories — highlighting hostels making a difference through sustainability, community, and culture.

  • Today: The HOSCARs combine both worlds — data-driven excellence through guest reviews and recognition of properties that champion responsible, inclusive, and eco-conscious travel.
